Philosophy

Dream Big Learning Pod will work as a creative think tank in which students will be encouraged to explore new ideas and solve problems in innovative ways. The Pod will provide a space for students to collaborate on projects, share their ideas with peers, and receive feedback from educators. Dream Big Learning Pod will also offer workshops and other educational resources to help students develop their creativity and critical thinking skills. By offering these resources, Dream Big Learning Pod will help students to reach their full potential as learners.
Students will be encouraged to explore their passions and skills. Throughout the day, students will be expected to take responsibility for their actions and emotions. Social and emotional development will be interlaced into the day, teaching students how to effectively communicate with one another with a safe and nurturing environment in which students can grow and thrive. By encouraging students to dream big, we hope to instill a lifelong love of learning.

The learning environment will be in both indoors and outdoor spaces.  Allowing students, to be in an environment where they can best learn and be comfortable, will help them to retain information and be successful.

As the world becomes increasingly digitized, it is important to find ways to balance nature with technology. We will learn both in traditional ways as well as access technology.  Technology will be used to develop skills as well as research.  However, technology will be a secondary tool for learning.

Students will be introduced to different cultures from our own through exploring foreign authors, movies, music, food, and history. By being exposed to different cultures, we can learn about new customs and traditions. We can also gain a better understanding of the world around us. Learning about other cultures can help us become more tolerant and open-minded. It can also help us appreciate the differences between cultures. When we are exposed to different cultures, we can grow as individuals and as members of a global community.

Healthy habits of body and mind which will be encouraged and based on the philosophy “Know Thyself”. The philosophy "Know Thyself" has been around for centuries, but it's just as relevant today as it was then. To truly know oneself, one must be aware of both their physical and mental health. That's why it's important to develop healthy habits of both body and mind. For the body, that means eating nutritious foods, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. For the mind, it means taking time to relax and de-stress, engaging in positive self-talk, and setting aside time for thoughtful reflection. When we take care of our bodies and minds in this way, we're not only giving ourselves the gift of good health, but we're also gaining a greater understanding of who we are and what we're capable of.

Students will explore key business skills such as creating a business and selling products at the farmers market. Students will learn to take a concept and bring a real product to market.  Students will learn the life skills of money management.   Money management of running a business and personal life will be built into the curriculum and will be part of the essential skills that students will master. In today's world, it's more important than ever to have a solid foundation in key business skills. Not only will they get to learn about creating a business and selling products, but they'll also get to experience firsthand the importance of money management. By being able to see the direct correlation between their personal finances and the success of their business, students will be able to better understand how to manage their money in both their personal and professional lives. This ability to transfer knowledge and skills between different areas is one of the most valuable things students can take away from this experience.

How can you be sure that your child is really learning if they're not in a traditional school setting? In Hawai’i, there are two key ways to show that your homeschooled child is receiving an adequate education. First, most Hawaii requires that homeschooled children take a universal screening test in grades 3,5,8 and 10th grade. This helps to ensure that homeschooled children are keeping up with their peers academically. Second, the easiest way to show a homeschool evidence of learning is a portfolio of work throughout the year. This portfolio can include things like daily work sheets, writing samples, and even artwork. Students will keep a portfolio through the year and test at the end of year to keep track of students academic development.
Academic focus will be on reading /writing and math which will weave into social studies, science, home economics, Hawaiian culture, sustainability, history, geography, computer science, languages and music (...) through a Waldorfish  style learning.  The core learning will meet essential Department of Education requirements.

Every quarter, there will be a different learning theme chosen by students and parents. This allows teachers to interweave the curriculum around a central idea, and tailor programs to the unique interests of each child. This not only supports their natural curiosity, but also their interactions with the world around them. By offering the opportunity to explore what interests them, children can develop a love for learning that will last a lifetime.
Parents play an important role in their child's education, both at home and at school. In a co-op setting, parents can provide support for learning by helping their child with assignments, providing transportation, and contributing financially to the program. Parent involvement is not required, but it can help make the learning experience more enriching for everyone involved. By collaborating with other parents and educators, parents can ensure that their child gets the best possible education and has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

A later start time can be very beneficial for children. They will be able to enjoy a more restful night's sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to learn. The day will start with a physical activity that can help to increase alertness and focus. Physical activity will be followed by meditation and centering reflection. As a result, children will be better able to engage with the material presented in class. In addition, they will have more time to eat a nutritious breakfast and get to school without feeling rushed. While it may take some time for children to adjust to the new schedule, the long-term benefits are well worth the effort.
